My professional life was almost all about pensions. I qualified as an actuary, but did virtually no specialist actuarial work except from being the actuary to Small Self-Administered Schemes (SSAS) for a while. Apart from that, I migrated from customer service via systems development to marketing. For the last 20 years or so I was a pensions ‘guru’, which included launching and editing a magazine, analysing data for a yearly report on UK pensions (and sometimes writing it), talking to press including some TV, doing presentations to financial advisers and representing my company on industry bodies and directly with politicians. These days I write on a freelance basis, including tuition material for those studying for pensions exams, and volunteer for the Pensions Ombudsman Early Resolution Service, trying to sort out problems people have with their pension schemes.
