You may be wondering why I’ve called my site OneFiveThree. The reason is the two areas I expect to feature most often – Christian faith and numbers. OneFiveThree says a lot about them.
Numbers
153 is a particularly interesting number. Here are a few of its features, which you can find out more about using the links if you’re feeling geeky.
- 153 is a narcissistic number – you get back to it if you add together the cubes of its digits: 13 + 53 + 33 = 153. More here.
- 153 is a triangular number. If you reverse its digits you get another triangular number (351), and adding 100 to 153 gives another triangular number (253). 15, 3 and 1 are also triangular numbers. More here.
- 153 is the sum of the first five factorials: 1! + 2! + 3! + 4! + 5!=153. More here.
- 153 can be expressed as a2 + b2 and also as (a+1)2 – (b+1)2, with a=12 and b=3. In addition, b2 + (b+1)2 is a square number. More here.
- 153 can be expressed as the sum of three square numbers in five different ways, which use a total of 12 different square numbers. No lower number uses more than 10 different squares in this way. More here.
Faith
153 and faith can be summarised in one Bible incident and two verses.
- 153 fish – After His resurrection Jesus miraculously enables His disciples to catch 153 large fish, demonstrating God’s abundant provision for our needs. More here.
- I Corinthians 15:3 – perhaps the most fundamental statement of what Christian faith is about: “Christ died for our sins.” More here.
- Luke 1:53 – Mary’s succinct summary of God’s passion for social justice – “He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.” More here.
